World champions will be crowned in the women's long jump and heptathlon and three men's events — the hammer throw, 10,000 meters and 100 meters — as the second day of competition concludes at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The session begins with the men's 100-meter semifinal and also includes the semifinals for both the women's and men's 1,500-meter races. The last of the seven events in the women's heptathlon — the 800 meters — is also on the docket. The heats for the men's 100 were held on Saturday, with Jamaica's Oblique Seville posting a personal-best 9.86 seconds to rank first.

Zharnel Hughes of Great Britain, who has the fastest time of the year after running a 9.83 on June 24, qualified for the semifinals with a 10.00 mark, while Kenya's Ferdinand Omanyala turned in a 9.84 on May 13 and was fourth in the heats with a 9.97. Noah Lyles was the top American in the heats with a 9.95, good for second-best.
With two-time world champion and Olympic gold medalist Malaika Mihambo of Germany out with an injury, the women's long jump is a wide-open competition. Jamaica's Ackelia Smith jumped 7.08 meters, the best mark in the world this year, back in May, while American Tara Davis-Woodhall had a 7.07 mark on May 5.
Poland's Wojciech Nowicki has the best hammer throw in the world this year at 81.92 meters. Ethiopians Berihu Aregawi and Selemon Barega posted the two best times of 2023 in the men's 10,000 meters on June 23 in Spain, with Aregawi running it in 26:50.66 and Selemon Barega posting a time of 26:51.87.
